Impact makers how to remain relevant in a competitive world

Effect creators how to stay pertinent in a serious world Effect producers how to stay important in a serious world I was as of late called upon to address a gathering of workers at an occasion to check the organization's venture into another line of business. This organization has been doing very well with a dependable client base.I make sense of that since they have such a dedicated fan base, that there must be something incredible about them. I chose to inspire them further and guarantee that every one of the colleagues knows and comprehend that they count.I needed them to keep on filling in as a group and comprehend that the organization will keep on making progress if everybody in the group keeps on contributing their portion and make an impact.Everyone cherishes and hunger for importance. Furthermore, pertinence comes in various structures. It is tied in with giving consideration, being associated, and getting huge to other people. If you are hitched like me, significance to your companion comes as consideration. That is the reason it isn't bizarre for a spouse to request quality time from th e husband every now and then. What she needs and what she is requesting is pertinence. What's more, this can be the other way around also. At the point when a spouse gets excessively occupied, the husband can need and request consideration as well.At your work environment, when you get some prize or acknowledgment, it shows that you are applicable. Organizations, nowadays can pick explicit zones to find their business for a vital reason. For instance, Amazon as of late opened another headquarter in New York in light of the fact that the city is important for its development strategy.Apple declared that it is opening a billion-dollar grounds in Austin, a move that shows that Austin is appropriate to their business. Why not New Orleans or Houston. Incidentally, I would have adored them to come to Houston. So the inquiry turns out to be, in what manner can you as an individual become and remain applicable in your profession, and family life? I have three snappy tips to impart to you tod ay, and I accept on the off chance that you can follow these tips, you will have the option to build up your importance any place you get yourself. Love what you do, and do what you love In my book Victors Ways I expounded on the requirement for everybody to do what they love and love what they do. This is critical on the off chance that you need to turn into an effect creator. You will make a fair showing in the event that you hate what you are doing, there is only no simple path around it. On the off chance that you are right now not enthusiastic about what you do, are there any parts of it that you appreciate. For instance, If you work in a medical clinic, you may not really like the way that you are on your feet for very nearly 8 hours consistently, however do you appreciate nursing the wiped out individuals to mending? On the off chance that you work in the client care division of your organization, and yes you experience some terrible clients, however do you appreciate working with those thankful clients that you help in taking care of their issues? Provided that this is true, you have to concentrate more on the sweet and fun an aspect of your responsibilities. What you center around turns into your world. There is no idealistic culture. There will never be an ideal activity. Indeed, even Presidents don't care for certain parts of their occupations, in the event that you question me, ask Donald Trump… on the off chance that he gets a kick out of the chance to go to Congress for subsidizing, and so forth. Be ravenous and remain enthusiastic To have an effect on whatever you do, you have to remain eager and enthusiastic about it. At the point when you consider individuals in sports, they have a solid energy and extreme enthusiasm for the game that they play. They can mess around for quite a long time, and they will awaken the following day, and they need to return still and do it once more. That is the degree of enthusiasm and interest we should all have for what we do. Numerous individuals are cheerful on Friday (TGIF), and less so on Monday (OGIM). You can't have an effect on the off chance that you are not associated and occupied with what you do. Profoundly fruitful individuals are energetic individuals. Energy is everything. In the event that you are not accomplishing something you are amped up for, you are duping yourself, and the possibility of making progress is remote to nothing. You should have an energy for what you never really forward to returning the following day to proceed. Doing what you are enthusiastic about will have you become an effect creator and assist you with exceeding expectations in what you do. Energy breeds excitement, and on the off chance that you are eager about something, you will have vitality and ooze certainty. Individuals will by and large need to connect with a high-vitality and sure individual; individuals will feel your energy without discussing it. On the off chance that you are in a position today where you are not content with your life, profession, or business, you must be striking to roll out an improvement and seek after what will fulfill you. Be eager and remain energetic, and you will end up being an effect creator and stay applicable. Seek after Excellence Relentlessly There is a typical saying that what merits doing merits progressing nicely. This is a convincing message for any individual who needs to accomplish more throughout everyday life and have an effect. The profoundly fruitful individuals utilize this idea of seeking after greatness to improve their abilities and show signs of improvement consistently at what they do. To be an effect creator, you need to endeavor to achieve greatness in your picked field of attempt; you need to ceaselessly discover methods of showing signs of improvement, honing your aptitudes, taking on higher obligations, defining greater objectives, and guaranteeing that you convey head class brings about whatever you do. In seeking after greatness, you should welcome on your A-game and put in your earnest attempts at what you do to guarantee that you convey a first rate result. Again in the field of game, when you consider the commitment of somebody like Lebron James to his group, you will comprehend that for sure he is an effect producer. The odds of the group winning increments when they have the playmaker on the pitch, cooperating with other colleagues. A similar truth holds for somebody like Lionel Messi of Barcelona or Tim Tebow and Peyton Manning for their distinctive NFL groups. Seeking after greatness is a responsibility that you have to make to begin getting results. It is a deliberate assurance not to make due with less however consistently to endeavor to give simply the best in whatever you do.

How not to network with a recruiter - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

How not to coordinate with a spotter At regular intervals or somewhere in the vicinity, I get a short email or LinkedIn message from somebody I am commonly associated with on LinkedIn saying something along the lines of: I'm searching for [this sort of role]. Do you have anything for me? and a CV/continue is appended. I wouldnt mind so a lot if the individual recognized what sort of jobs I was enrolling for and their experience was really pertinent, yet more often than not this isnt the case. Regularly the activity searcher is very senior and should know better at this phase of their career. Why is this an incorrect method to coordinate with a scout? Right off the bat, it's exceptionally conventional â€" at times my name isn't referenced in an email and it is very clear this is a layout. At times a similar letter is sent to a few selection representatives on bcc! Approach to get your email erased right away. Besides, it is about what you need. I do get such messages a LOT yet this methodology wouldn't make me like to support this individual. So in what manner would it be a good idea for you to catch up? Above all, customize your message. Continuously incorporate the beneficiary's name and if it's been quite a while since we've associated, remind me how we met. I have cooperated with a great many applicants in my 11 years in enlistment and have just about 15,000 associations on LinkedIn at this moment â€" I am essentially incapable to recall everybody, particularly on the off chance that we associated 5 years prior. Try not to cause me to accomplish the work for you. In the event that we've met previously, give me an update of what you've been up to from that point forward and mention to me what explicitly you're searching for. How about we guess we're associated yet haven't spoken much previously, and you're searching for another vocation opportunity in the business I enroll in. I'd prefer to see a concise synopsis of your ability and key accomplishments and to know precisely what sort of an open door you're searching for. It additionally truly pesters me when applicants plainly try not to peruse my LinkedIn profile before reaching them, in such a case that they did, they wouldn't figure I can help with employments in oil and gas industry or something equally unessential to what I do. Lastly, don't generally request help â€" offer to help too. You can offer to interface me to somebody, send a fascinating article or make a referral for one of my enlistment ventures. In case you don't know how to enable, you to can generally cause a general to please inform me as to whether I can help in any capacity offer. At the point when you send me an email recommending you've perused my profile or have done the examination on the organization I am working for, I will need to support you. I may not generally have the option to do it promptly, yet I'll be quite a lot more liable to think of you as when I have a reasonable job open or I'll allude you to another person. At the point when I worked for Expedia for a long time, I've recruited such a significant number of individuals that way â€" they sent a nice email and regardless of whether I didn't have a job accessible for them quickly, in the event that they remained in contact, now and then an ideal job would come up sometime in the not too distant future. Following up routinely is significant, as well. I don't mean pursuing the scout week by week â€" yet remaining at the front of their brain will guarantee that the enrollment specialist is bound to consider you when a reasonable job opens up. Your Career What Really Matters Is What You Do With It

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Your Career: What Really Matters is What You Do With It I practiced law a long time. I’ve been around thousands of lawyers in the US and Canada. The lawyers I’ve met who feel most fulfilled in their careers are not necessarily the top rainmakers in their firms and not necessarily those lawyers who have achieved fame. They are the lawyers who feel fulfilled because they are serving clients and making some kind of meaningful contribution to something greater than themselves. I thought about this all week and especially Saturday as I watched Pope Francis stopping his motorcade to bless a young boy suffering from cerebral palsy. I thought about it again yesterday, when Patrick, our Prosper United Methodist Church Director of Youth Ministries delivered the message. He began with a Yogi Berra quote (very appropriate for this week): It ain’t the heat, it’s the humility. I think many lawyers would argue that you can’t be a successful lawyer and be humble or show humility. I understand, but I believe they may be misinterpreting what it means. Maybe this will help. C.S. Lewis described humility this way: So, as a lawyer, humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking more about the clients you serve. Later in his message, our youth director shared with us a specific example: Mr. Rogers. He played a video clip from Fred Rogers Induction into the TV Hall of Fame. If you want some inspiration for the week, I invite you to watch just 6 minutes, which is in this YouTube clip. When you watch simply substitute lawyer for the TV professionals. Fred Rogers begins his Hall of Fame induction speech by reminding us that “Fame” is just a four letter word, like many other four letter words. What ultimately matters is what we do with it. Those of us in television (law) are chosen to be servants….We are chosen to meet the deeper needs of those who watch and listen (those who need our help.) I believe the greatest joy I experienced practicing law was not when I landed a big client, not when I had a great year, not when I won a big case. Instead, it was those times when I helped someone who desperately needed my help and who I knew would never be able to pay me. A couple of years ago, I wrote about one client named Rachel:  Why is “Pro Bono” so fulfilling? It’s been well over 20 years ago now, but I still remember the look on Rachel’s face, and the hug she gave me, when we successfully dealt with the issue she was facing. I think Yogi was on to something. If you have a moment and wish to do so, please offer a comment and share a time when what you did as a lawyer made an impact on someone’s life.     I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Rio 2016 A marathon not a sprint - Viewpoint - careers advice blog Viewpoint careers advice blog

Rio 2016 A marathon not a sprint - Viewpoint - careers advice blog Henrique Gonzalez is HR Director for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. He explains how the workforce has been put together over the last five years and why staff and volunteers are so engaged with the Games. What have been the biggest challenges of organising the workforce for Rio 2016? How have these been overcome? There have been many big challenges throughout the time a project like this takes. I started five years ago in a start-up context, recruiting leadership, building a culture, setting HR strategy, processes and systems, setting the workforce headcount and operation planning. Attracting, engaging and managing 70,000 volunteers has been one of the biggest challenges we have faced. After years of planning, we have had more than 250,000 candidates and more than 60,000 have already been selected in more than 15 selection centres all over Brazil. We have completed 22 test events with more than 8,000 volunteers. We are very confident and proud of the quality and passion these volunteers have to deliver the Games. The workforces for previous Olympics have been hugely engaged. Why do you think staff feel so connected to their work on the Games? The Games represent so many pure values in our minds. People think of peace between nations, education through sports, improving health habits, diversity and inclusion. This means they have a capacity to attract people who need to feel meaning in their work, fulfilling both their professional and personal interests. People who want to build a better world can easily connect their work to that goal. Has it been difficult to attract top talent to positions that they know they will only hold for a relatively short amount of time? We do not attract talent by money, nor by exponential career progression or stability. Those who are searching for these qualities at this moment of their career will not feel attracted to come to work for the Games. However, it is easy to attract talented individuals who deal easily with uncertainty, are adaptable, confident or who are looking for meaning in their jobs. Those whose careers are driven by learning, who want to build national and international networks and who wish to have unique stories to tell about their contribution to a historical and highly complex project are often a good fit. You’ve previously worked in the corporate world. How has organising the workforce for the Olympics differed from your former roles? We have the most diverse team I’ve ever seen. We have people who came from sports federations, event marketing, traditional corporate backgrounds, national and multinational companies from many different sectors and those from the public sector. We have many talented people who were stars where they worked before, and are willing to do their best. The success here is based on integrated teamwork collaborations as well as internal and external partnerships. What do you think the Games will mean to Brazil as a country? What legacy do you hope they will leave for both its workforce and the nation? The Games will help our country’s development journey, showcasing Brazil’s capacity to organise and deliver a huge, complex project like this. The Games will also showcase our culture and develop our tourism potential, promoting Brazil as a nation that is proud to receive and welcome our visitors. What are your plans professionally once the Games have finished? I will take a few months to go sailing and after that, embark on some consultancy and coaching. I may also engage in another project as an executive. Either way, it will need to be something that will fulfil my values and my need for adrenaline. 4 Tips for Effectively Branding Your Resume - Resume Writer For You

4 Tips for Effectively Branding Your Resume I  know  you  must  be  thinking  that  this  is  one  of  those  regular  posts  which  would  give  tips  about  resumes.  But  trust  me,  this  post  will  give  you  valuable  insight  into  providing  an  edge  to  your  resume.  In  my  opinion,  making  the  perfect  pitch  to  the  recruiters  has  become  similar  to  solving  a  jigsaw  puzzle.  Unless  you  match  the  pieces  correctly,  you  won’t  be  able  to  complete  the  puzzle.  You  could  try  to  fit  in  a  somewhat  similar  piece,  but  it  won’t  serve  the  purpose.  This  is  exactly  the  case  with  job  search  these  days. Job  seekers  today  have  understood  the  importance  of  customizing  their  resumes  and  it  is  not  only  for  standing  out  from  the  crowd,  but  also  to  instil  confidence  in  the  recruiters  that  you  are  the  best  candidate  for  the  job  position.  You  need  to  ensure  that  your  resume  matches  the  profile  that  is  being  offered.  This  is  the  reason  behind  customizing  the  resume  for  every  application  (without  resorting  to  false  information)  as  you  need  to  make  minor  modifications  to  ensure  that  the  important  things  are  highlighted  prominently. Here  are  4  tips  that  should  help  you  in  branding  your  resume  effectively. Change  the  Targeted  Job  Title The  job  title  needs  to  be  in  tandem  with  the  job  position  that  you  are  applying  for.  It  would  be  even  better  if  the  targeted  job  title  can  be  marked  in  bold  letters  so  that  is  prominently  visible.  Make  sure  that  the  title  is  changed  before  sending  in  your  resume  along  with  your  application,  so  that  it  maintains  relevance  with  the  job  position  being  applied  to. Place  Relevant  Information  First You  should  ensure  that  relevant  information  (in  the  entire  resume)  is  arranged  in  a  manner  which  highlights  relevant  information.  However,  the  emphasis  here  is  to  modify  the  contents  of  the  â€œsummary”  section  such  that  any  information,  which  may  be  directly  or  remotely  related  to  the  job  profile,  is  presented  in  descending  order  of  importance.  A  recruiter  checks  the  summary  first  and  then  moves  on  to  the  other  sections.  So  you  need  to  make  a  powerful  impact  within  this  limited  window  of  opportunity. Use  Relevant  Keywords  for  Skills  and  Competencies Due  to  the  extensive  integration  of  technology  in  recruitment  and  selection  processes,  it  has  become  crucial  for  resumes  to  contain  specific  keywords  which  would  highlight  them  in  ATS  (applicant  tracking  software).  But  the  role  of  keywords  doesn’t  end  there.  They  are  also  useful  to  grab  the  attention  of  the  recruiter  during  manual  reviewing  of  the  application  document(s).  So  make  sure  that  you  place  relevant  keywords  and  core  attributes  at  the  top  of  the  â€œskills”  section  as  it  would  help  in  making  a  good  impact  on  the  recruiter. Re-check  Your  Achievements The  achievements  section  needs  to  be  re-checked  with  the  initial  words  in  the  statement  comprising  critical  and  relevant  information.  There  is  a  fair  possibility  that  the  resume  would  be  screened  initially  by  a  low  level  HR  representative,  so  it  is  important  to  grab  his  /  her  attention  in  the  first  few  words  itself.  It  is  also  advised  that  the  number  of  achievements  should  be  limited  to  2  or  3  with  only  the  most  significant  and  major  achievements  being  mentioned.  This  does  not  mean  that  you  do  not  have  other  achievements.  Remember,  this  is  a  resume  and  not  a  CV.  So  be  brief  and  concise. Seek  Professional  Help If  you  are  uncertain  about  the  changes  and  the  ways  in  which  they  have  to  be  done,  then  seek  professional  help  from  professional  resume  writing  services.  You  could  also  make  your  resume  online  with  so  many  online  resume  generators  available  today.  But  nothing  beats  the  personal  touch  provided  by  resume  writing  services  where  you  get  the  benefit  of  an  in-depth  consultation  from  experts  and  you  get  your  resume  redesigned  and  targeted  by  some  of  the  best  writers  in  the  industry. What does my body language tell my interviewer - Freesumes

What does my body language tell my interviewer What does my body language tell my interviewer? Before you have even uttered your first greeting, your job interviewer has formed an opinion of you. As you casually stroll across the room from the door making your way to the awaiting interview chair, your interviewer has sized you up according to your non-verbal body language. First impressions last, so be conscious of how you look to others. Try to think how what you do before, during and as your job interview ends will influence their opinion of you. According to UCLA professor and researcher Albert Mehrabian, 55% of messages processed by the brain are based on a persons body language. This means that you are being judged even before you have opened your mouth to speak.Could your body language be the deciding factor between your interviewer choosing you over someone else with matching skills that would be an equally good fit for the job? Many prospective employees, if they have done their homework well, will have prepared for their interview thoroughly. They would have tailore d their resume and cover letter to suit the requirements of the job. They would have diligently studied the history of the company. They would have prepared some answers for the most common interview questions that are asked. They would have dressed smartly and coiffed their hair into a neat non-fussy style. But here is where a lot of prospective candidates let themselves down â€" they fail to recognize the non-verbal signals they are sending.Dont rushEven the most keen candidate who has brushed up for their interview will have a habit of rushing into their interview in an effort to start parading their carefully prepared answers. They forget to enter the room with a good posture. They forget to walk across the room with their head held high. They forget to smile and make good eye contact. They forget to offer their handshake to the interviewer. They forget that the interview had actually started from the moment they stepped through the door. Instead they were too focussed on prepar ing to deliver their presentation once they were in the hot-seat. If it came down to a choice between you and another candidate, how would you feel knowing that you had lost out on that job simply because the other guy had presented himself in a more engaging way at interview? Would it bother you knowing that you had failed simply because you forgot to smile or didnt shake hands with the interviewer? I think it would bother you greatly!During the interview you should try to pace yourself and deliberately slow down your speech a little. Because you will already be a bit anxious, it is quite normal to speak at a faster pace than you normally do. Try to focus on pronouncing your words properly in a more measured way. This will help keep your nerves under control and will also mean your interviewer will clearly hear every word you say in reply their questions. There is nothing worse during interview than your interviewer having to ask you to repeat yourself because they didnt quite c atch your answer.Hold your posture during interviewAs a child I am sure you were told endlessly by your parents or teachers to stop slouching. Slouching is not only bad for your posture but it will also give off a negative vibe during your interview.   Slouching screams out, “I dont care” and your interviewer will quickly pick up on this. If you need to work on your sitting attitude, then practice at home. Sit in front of a mirror and see for yourself how slouching comes across. Practice sitting up straight and get a friend or family member to do a mock interview with you while you properly. Notice how you feel when giving your responses to their questions while sitting up attentively. Keep checking yourself every now and then. If you find yourself starting to slouch, subtly straighten back up again. Maintain good eye contactAlways look your interviewer in the eye while they are talking with you, but never in an intimidating way. A good rule of thumb is at least 70% good eye contact. Smile and nod gently to show your understanding of their questioning. You can look away to compose your answer, but never stare nervously at the floor when giving your answer â€" always deliver your response while looking them in the eye. Try to avoid nervously darting your eyes around the room. This gives off the impression that you may be hiding something or are not entirely confident about being there. If you feel a little flustered, then you could look down at your note pad or take some notes to re-focus your mind.Squash the squirmingHumans are very rarely still by nature. We are always moving in subtle little ways. We gesticulate with our hands while we talk, we move our heads around and shift position in our seats or while standing. It is fine to gesture with your hands during interview, but try to refrain from causing a hurricane! Keep the fidgeting to a minimum and if you have a habit of playing with a pen, cracking your knuckles, or twisting a piece of hair, then t ry to hold out until the interview is over and you have left the building. There is nothing more distracting for an interviewer than your squirming and it may distract them from your answers, which will not bode well for the decision making. You have only got to hold it all together for a short while â€" and remember the most important aspect of your body language â€" remember to smile! previous article

Try to make sense of either how to deal with that relationship or receive in return. The DISC assessment apparatus is helpful for making sense of how you speak with individuals and how people around you react to your strategy for correspondence. It appears as though our whole lives are spent attempting to please someonea educator, a chief, a relative. A few people possibly get notification from their supervisors when something turns out badly. Make certa in to monitor your accounts of progress consistently so your conversation at execution audit time centers around your positive commitments as opposed to simply the things that should be improved. No work merits taking a chance with your wellbeing for. I meet numerous individuals who have relinquished their wellbeing for their employments. Stress can add to various medical problems including weight, coronary illness, and despondency. Inspect your profession decisions and normally survey how well they are lined up with your general life goals.Getting terminated isn't the most exceedingly awful thing that can occur throughout everyday life. The Obnoxious Guide to Environmentally-Safe Job Hunting

The Obnoxious Guide to Environmentally-Safe Job Hunting 4 For Blog Action Day 2007, thousands of bloggers tried to raise other people's awareness about the Environment. 17 Ways To Save the Planet A Bit Move to an environmentally-cleaner city than yours. Job search from there. Rearrange your work area for maximum natural light. Aood metric is whether you can see the recruiter's eyes on the other end of the phone line or not. If you need artificial light, only use fluorescent lighting, but not Off-White or WinterFresh White; try to find the ultra-rare Holy Grail White. You need a computer to read these tips, so get a refurbished machine before someone else throws it in a landfill. If you can't find one before this Blog Action Day thing is over, then at least buy an Energy Star-certified system. Make sure your job search computer is setup to waste as little electricity as possible. Not using it to job hunt will help tremendously. Also acceptable â€" not even turning it on. Have a current-sucking CRT monitor? Save electricity by searching the Internet with Blackle instead of Google. Have an LCD monitor? Search the Internet with Google instead of Blackle. Like night and day. Turn off your computer when not actively using it and/or when people are spamming you. Before is best. Go gadget green with rechargeable batteries in your wireless mouse, MP3 player or USB all-nighter coffeemug warmer without batteries. If you get thirsty while working, forget bottled water, drink tap water. If the tap water is brackish, don't. Avoid printing out CVs and cover letters unnecessarily. Try to anticipate in advance whether companies will need them or not. Better yet, decide instead for them and then go look someplace else where you're really needed and likely to be appreciated. Use recycled paper or ultra-expensive African non-tree paper. Or just stick with recycled paper. Recycle any rough copies or other document drafts that you no longer need. Bonus points if they contain your address or other identifying details. Mega bonus points for a credit card number or classified information that you put in the trash. Job hunt from home. If you have to go out, walk. If you don't want to sweat, use public transportation; take an electric bus or hybrid train. If you have to drive, get a hybrid car. If that's a challenge, carpool. Best of all- carpool in a hybrid. Wear a solar-powered jacket wherever you go, toting a solar-powered backpack containing a solar-powered flashlight. Look out for a solar-powered CV. Get a solar or wind-powered charger for your cellphone. Get used to walking with one arm held above your head. Before your next job interview, only shower with hot water from your solar-powered water heater (dud shemesh in Israel). If you don't have one, use your neighbor's shower. Reduce CO2 emissions by closing your mouth when walking to your next interview and from your next interview. How about your own environmental job search tips? How Employer Branding and Recruitment Fell in Love

How Employer Branding and Recruitment Fell in Love Reality check! Are you aware that recruiting has changed? Gone are the days of “Post and Pray”: where you post a job listing and wait for the swarm of candidates to come a runnin. Todays recruiters have bigger, better technology but we also have a veritable firehose of candidates to deal with. The baby boomers are retiring in droves and while we have a large market of graduates stepping up to the plate, we are still seeing candidate shortages across the board. This coupled with the changing attitudes toward work of the millennials vs. those exiting the workforce, it can leave recruiters with a difficult job to find the right fit. The job market has shifted and new methods of recruiting are coming in to play in todays market, companies have to bring their A-game if they want the top players. The bottom line question here is: “Where does recruitment marketing fit  in to your overall corporate recruiting strategy?” Lets get something straight: posting a quirky job listing is a far cry from using recruitment marketing in your recruiting strategy. It is no longer enough to slap a mission statement on some branded frisbees, companies are stepping up and presenting their own unique experience to candidates in a competitive fashion. This is not about gimmicks or tactics, its about a total strategic effort that begins with recruiting. This next generation of candidates dont necessarily expect more from the company that they choose to work for, but they are most certainly on a hunt for something different than their predecessors. So do a deep dive (first) into what makes working at your company different. If the answer is nothing, change that before embarking on any recruitment marketing plan. Some questions to whet your appetite: What can a candidate expect to learn? What sort of work-life support do you offer? (This doesnt have to mean work from home, it can mean having a playroom in the office or letting the volleyball team take off at 3pm on Thursday as long as their tasks are done) How will a candidate be treated by their manager? Their team? Their executive? What kinds of projects will they be working on? Once you are in tune with what you have to offer, you need to align it with what your target candidates really want. You cant do that without research. Demographics are playing a huge role in how employers craft their branding initiatives nowadays and the findings are not only surprising to even veteran researchers, they are changing on a regular basis. Know your target market:  What might work for some, wont work for others. Does your set of candidates put an emphasis on social media freedom, salary, vacation time, or something as small as dress code? Know what theyre looking for, and let them know you offer that. Present an all around brand experience. Even before the interview, the candidate should have a clear picture of your company culture and employer brand. You should be blaring your message on social media, job listings, your website and employer branding videos. This all ties in to recruiting the right people for the right job and creating a synergistic work environment. Strategic communication is crucial during the employer branding experience. Keep it real:  Yes, a big part of this process is to attract the talent that you want and need, however, be honest about what you really are. Dont present a 9-5, suit-wearing, clock-punching business as a fun-loving, jeans-wearing environment. The goal here isnt to misrepresent yourself in order to get those great candidates, it is to present yourself in the best light and let them know what you can offer them. If you are rigid and demanding, thats okay. But you need to ensure that you balance it with the positive sides of that equation, like ambitious, driven and unparalleled. Dont forget the website!  The website is hugely important in candidate experience, especially the latter stages.  We dont so much as walk into a burger joint without yelping it, you know theyre going to be all over that website. Make sure that it is authentically representing you. Its not enough to have a nice, easy to navigate site, your career portal should really reflect how you wish to be seen by candidates and in turn, show them what its like to work for your organization. How do you do this? By taking advantage of how simple its become to take pictures, upload videos and write posts about the burning questions in your candidates minds. In this new climate for recruiting, employer brand plays a huge role. This new workforce has a, “the ball is in my court”, mentality and its showing. They will hold out and hunt around until they find what theyre looking for. Are you it?

You will like your job more if you make a friend at work

You will like your job more if you make a friend at work Heres some advice for those of you who dont like your job: Maybe your job is not your problem. Maybe its that you are not trying hard enough to make friends at work. People with one friend at work are much more likely to find their work interesting. And people with three friends at work are virtually guaranteed to be very satisfied with their life. These are some of the findings Tom Rath reports in his new book, Vital Friends: The People You Cant Afford to Live Without. As a longtime Gallup employee, Rath draws on a massive number of interviews conducted by this polling organization. Rath says a friend who can change your work environment is someone you spend a lot of time in a relationship with. And you are probably making a difference in that persons life, too. If the person were gone, work would be less fun. Nikhil Rajpal, at Project: Think Different identified a best friend at work immediately: My friend Will and I go to lunch together every day. When work gets tough the friendship makes it easier to get through the day. When one of us is stressed or had too much work one of us buys the other coffee and we walk around and talk about it. Rath has identified eight different friendship roles. No single person can be all these roles at once, and the fatal flaw people make in relationships is asking that of one person often a boss or a spouse. A navigator, for example, is someone who is like a mentor. You dont need to have regular conversations with the person, but when you do, they are very meaningful in your life. A connector is the type of friend made famous by Malcolm Gladwell, in The Tipping Point, for being able to give you a network. And a champion is the type of friend who thrives on your accomplishments and happiness. The threshold for gaining the benefits of health and life satisfaction from friendship is three or four friends. Here are some steps to make those friends: 1. Identify someone appropriate. When I was in human resources I had a lot of confidential information, so it was no surprise that I became friends with the executive assistant for the CEO, who also had a lot of confidential information, says Heather Mundell, career coach and author of the blog Dream Big. 2. Be open. On the Internet, where ranting is de rigueur, it would seem that half of all workers are surrounded by idiots. This way of thinking will not find you friends. We like to think we can size someone up in ten seconds. But often our opinions of people change over time, says Mundell. 3. Make time for face-to-face contact. If someone stops by your cube and says do you have few minutes? Its nice if you do. Be a good listener, says Mundell. Over time, problem solving together and venting will lead to building trust. You should stop by peoples cubes and shoot the breeze, too. 4. Choose your surroundings carefully. Find an office that encourages friendships the structure of workspaces, the quality of common areas, the size of the well-stocked fridge all these factors can contribute to making an office full of friendships. Rath found that you are three times more likely to have a close-knit workgroup if the physical environment makes it easy to socialize. 5. Find coworkers with shared vision and values. This situation is probably most common at a nonprofit like Project: Think Different: Everyone is linked together based on a passion for what were doing, says, Raipal. We all have a strong desire to change messages in pop culture. 6. Shift your focus away from yourself. People spend so much time trying to manage themselves, says Rath. Formal education focuses on mastery of topic areas, and graduate school allows you to focus on your own interests. But when it comes to improving our lives, writes Rath, its the energy between two people that makes a difference. This is going to be a big change for most people. Most workers do not make friends at work. But without a best friend at work, the chances of being engaged in your job are slim. So maybe you should put aside advice about finding the perfect job by searching want ads for your calling. Instead, look for a job and an office that facilitate relationships; friendship is your calling.

Keeping up with the Jennifers and Jolies

Keeping up with the Jennifers and Jolies Todays post is by Gabriela Vega. In today’s society with the numerous magazines covering the world of women’s fashion, countless television shows featuring vain reality stars and limitless red carpet coverage scrutinizing the clothing of celebrities, it is easy for a woman to get overly-wrapped up in concerns about her clothing, jewelry and shoes.   Our society seems to be dedicated to the acquisition of stuff.   However, focusing all of your energy on such acquisitions can have negative effects that, in the long run, influence your quality of life. Now, I am the last person to tell others how they should or should not comport themselves.   Growing up in my family, as new immigrants, we lived simply. My mother would buy us some new clothes at the local discount store at the beginning of the school year and then add winter pieces during Christmas.   My parent’s motto to financial education was, “we cannot buy that, period.”   No further explanation was given.   Needless to say when I got to college and discovered the world of credit cards and “free money,” well, I thought I was on my way to making it.   Now, I was never Confessions of a Shopaholic bad.   But, last month as I paid off the last of my credit card debt, I realized the numerous ways in which acquisition mode effected my life. Emotional Effects I’m sure you have experienced it before; your boss is a pain or you are in a dating black hole and you decide that you need a ‘pick me up.’   The quickest way to turn your frown upside down is to head for the nearest department store shoe (or purse, or make-up, or clothing) section for a little ‘shop therapy.’ You step inside, smell the new leather and see the rainbow of colors and array of styles.   You pick up a pair of red, four-inch stilettos and all of a sudden all of those words that you could not say to your boss or the guy with whom you just broke up disappear.   You try them on and they make your legs look incredible.   You know that you have to experience this feeling again.   Because you don’t get paid for another two weeks, you decide that you will put them on your credit card.   You reason that this would have been the amount that you would have paid for a therapist or that they are an investment that will ultimately help you land that next job and you take them home. Unfortunately, come Monday you still have to deal with the same boss or when the weekend comes, you don’t have a date and you are back in the same spot.   Spending money, can give you tremendous high, particularly when there are other things that are trying to bring you down. Eventually, in order to get the same satisfaction you must spend more and do it more often.   Guess what?   That is the sign of an addiction.   Unfortunately, over-spending is accepted and, even at times, encouraged (anyone remember President Bush saying it was patriotic to spend?) The reality is that the shop therapy good feelings never last and you must still face that which is bothering you. Financial Effects If you have ever put anything on a credit card that you could not immediately turn around and pay off, you must know that the big ticket purchase you made will cost you more than the price tag (I’m not a mathematician but here is a simple example.)   With interest rates and even annual fees, a $1,000.00 purchase can eventually cost you anywhere from $1,150.00 to $1,220.00 (for credit cards with interest from 15% to 22%, which are average rates of interest) and that is just for one year. If you are a person that must continuously shop to repeat the same emotional high described above, your debt can quickly get out of control. Without careful monitoring, you will end up maxing out one or more credit cards.   Add that to only the minimum payments and you have dug yourself a nice hole.   After all, the minimum payment is only enough to pay that month’s interest rate plus a little extra.   Thus, you continue to pay on the same debt without seeing a significant drop.   As a smart, professional woman you would never let a business operate in this manner and you know what?   Neither should you. Creating a Recovery Plan All of this happened to me.   Finally, I got to the point that I decided that I would not allow myself to continue on the same cycle.   For me, it was additionally difficult because unless I had monthly amounts automatically debited from my checking account, I would sometimes forget to pay on time, which only led to more fees.   So here is what I did. 1. Accept that you are going to feel ‘poor’ for a while. If you are committed to becoming debt free, you may have to come to terms with the fact that you may not have disposable income for a while.   Thus all of those wonderful extras to which you have become accustomed to must go.   Monthly manis, pedis and facials, gone.   A new pair of shoes every month or dinner and drinks with your friends every Thursday night, gone.   But, and this was important for me, realize that this is your choice and that you are on your way to true financial independence.   This will give you the resolve and strength to say no whenever your friends want to meet for a lunchtime pedi. 2.   Begin to pay everything on time. Whether you are like me and you need things to be placed on automatic withdraw or not, making timely payments is critical to success because otherwise you are stuck with extra fees that ultimately begin to incur interest themselves (debtors are so clever.) 3.   Pay more than just the minimum. Whatever your minimum payment, resolve to pay a minimum of three times above that.   For me, it was beneficial to actually seeing amounts cut down at a rate that made me feel like there was a light at the end of the tunnel.   Plus, the more you see your debt reduced, the more you likely you are to become even more aggressive and pay quicker. 4.   Pay the cards with the highest interest rate quicker. As I stated before, I am not a mathematician.   But, it doesn’t take a mathematician to figure out that if you have a credit card with a 22% interest rate and one with a 15% interest then the 22% credit card has to become your top priority.   For this reason, if you need to shift the amounts you send, say four times above the minimum rate and two times the minimum rate then by all means, go for it.   Once you pay off the higher rate card, send all of the money that you were sending to that credit card to the other(s.) 5.   Consider Interest-Free Credit Cards. If you receive a viable offer for a “no interest for a year” credit card then consider transferring all or a bulk of your debt to that card.   Once that is accomplished, determine how much you need to pay each month before the end of that year and pay it.   For example, if you have $5,000.00 of debt transferred to an interest free for a year credit card you will have to pay $416.67 per month in order to get it paid within that year.   But, beware of these cards, as sometimes they will add all of the interest back if you do not pay them off within the year. Whatever, you decide to do remember you are a smart, strong career girl and as with all trials and tribulations that you have faced, this one too shall pass. What tips do YOU have for those struggling with debt?

Do You Have What It Takes To Become A Nurse - CareerMetis.com

Do You Have What It Takes To Become A Nurse Photo Credit- flickr.comThere is a severe lack of homegrown nurses in our country at the moment. Some experts think some people shy away from the career because of the amount of training involved. Others say that nurses don’t earn enough money.Whatever the reason, many unsuitable people also start their training every year and stop after a couple of months. So, with that in mind, this article will discuss what it takes to excel in that profession.By the time readers leave this page, they should have no doubts in their minds about whether they are suitable or not.1) An empathetic natureevalevalThere can be no getting away from the fact that nurses have to spend a lot of time will sick people. Those individuals need to come across as caring and understanding. So, the role is only suitable for those who would consider themselves to have an empathetic nature. While nurses have many tasks to undertake, one of the most important is making patients feel comfortable and happy. That is never going to happen if the person struggles to see things from another’s point of view. So, anyone who wants to work towards that career goal should take a long and hard look at their personalities.2) A willingness to learnPhoto Credit â€" Flickr.comGetting qualified as a nurse is a brilliant idea because there is a shortage in this country. Still, it can take between three and five years depending on the specialist field the individual selects. However, there are many different options on the table when it comes to the way in which those people get their qualifications. Traditionally, most students would head off to university. That isn’t always possible when we consider the fact that many folks have responsibilities at home. So, it makes sense that many potential nurses now opt for online MSN nursing programs. They allow candidates to complete the courses at a time that suits their routines. It’s the perfect option for anyone who has children at home.3) A good work ethicNurses hav e to work long hours most of the time. They also have to help out with a variety of different jobs around the hospital. So, it stands to reason that successful people will require a good work ethic.evalNurses often have to:Converse with patientsWork with childrenTake bloodPerform medical testsAssist doctorsDeal with relativesComplete paperworkAdminister medicationMany nurses also work more than sixty hours every week. During busy periods, some professionals might work for more than eighty hours during the week. Be prepared for a working schedule of that nature because it tends to happen a LOT.Anyone who can place a tick next to each of the qualities mentioned in this post should have what it takes to become a nurse. Of course, successful candidates will also require perfect spelling and number skills. Nurses often have to record readings and other information. If they make mistakes, those individuals could put a patient’s life at risk. If any readers think they are suitable for the role, they should put the wheels in motion as soon as possible.evalHopefully, those people can begin to contribute towards providing better health care for every member of our society. Good luck!

Truth and meaning - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Truth and meaning - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Heres a thought: Truth is something you find. Meaning is something you create. Because a truth youve just created, can hardly be said to be a truth. Truth is something you find outside of yourself. And because meaning that comes to you from outside of you does not mesure up to meaning you create yourself for yourself from what happens around you. And it just struck me, that if the meaning you create for yourself is not based on truth it must be a flimsy and vulnerable thing indeed. Or what do you think? Thanks for visiting my blog.
